What a reliable moving quote looks like

A reputable mover should take time to understand your inventory, access conditions, services, schedule, and other job details before estimating the move. The company should also explain its pricing clearly and be willing to put the estimate in writing.

“B2 Moving guarantees and stands behind our estimates. We back them up in writing by email. If we go over the high end of our estimate, it is on us—we cover the difference and treat it as a learning experience that forces us to get better.”

  • Shares pricing freely and explains how the total is calculated.
  • Sends the estimate and important move details in writing.
  • Has strong ratings from real customers.
  • Shows real team members on its website and online profiles.
  • Is helpful, polite, responsive, and service-oriented.
  • Publishes hourly pricing or readily shares rate details.
  • Stands behind verbal promises with written communication.
  • Has authentic reviews with specific customer experiences.
  • Invests in its team and is proud to show who will perform the work.
  • Acts with urgency and keeps the customer’s best interest in mind.

Moving quote red flags

A low number is not necessarily a good estimate. Watch for a quote that leaves out essential questions, avoids written details, or relies on a rate that looks dramatically different from every other mover you contacted.

  • You receive a lowball quote before the company learns the specifics of your move.
  • Pricing is unclear, and getting a complete cost breakdown is difficult.
  • The company hesitates to send the quote or details by email.
  • It is difficult to find real photos of the company’s moving team.
  • Calls and questions are not answered with reasonable urgency.
  • The hourly rate is dramatically lower than your other quotes without a clear reason.
  • No pricing information is available online or explained directly.
  • The company responds defensively to legitimate customer concerns.
  • The mover relies on inexperienced day laborers or undisclosed third parties.
  • The company loses interest in helping after you book or pay.

Three questions to ask every mover

Are your hourly rates published online or kept private—and why?

The moving industry often discourages publishing hourly prices, but customers deserve a clear starting point. B2 chooses pricing transparency because rate information is one of the first things customers ask about. See B2 Moving pricing.

Will you send my quote details by email?

Hesitancy to document an estimate may indicate weak estimating practices or uncertainty about what was discussed. B2 emails the move details so both sides can confirm the inventory, services, access, schedule, and assumptions used for the estimate.

Is the estimate binding or non-binding, and what can change the price?

Ask the mover to explain the estimate type, included services, potential additional charges, and how approved changes will be documented. B2 uses written estimates and service agreements so customers can review the scope and pricing terms before the move.

Bottom line: compare the complete scope—not just the headline rate. Your written estimate and signed service documents should identify what is included, what assumptions were made, and which customer-requested changes may affect the final cost. The written estimate and service documents control any applicable pricing commitment.
